Mandela Day: 'Angels' from eThekwini Region Lifted the Othandweni Children's Hopes

It was at 15:00 on Wednesday 18 July 2018 when eThekwini Regional staff, led by Nandipha Mathonsi and Solomon Mashatole arrived in their unimaginable numbers at Othandweni Children Home, carrying a large consignment of groceries and gifts. The visit was solely to bring ‘hope’, ‘inspiration’ and ‘happiness’ to the children of Othandweni. Remember, it was Mandela Day, where South Africa and the world was focussed on “A life of Service – Celebrating the Birth of a World Icon”. On the same note, Ms Dudu Fihlela, the Regional Director for eThekwini Region and other members of her management team were also engaged in similar activities within the areas of Tongaat, Verulam and Mandeni.

The visit by staff from eThekwini Region was a godsend indeed. You could see the children’s dimpled cheeks with smiles that confirmed happiness and the bright eyes with sparkles that accepted hope. With jubilation and emotional ululation, they sang the song “Happy birthday Madiba!” and you would silently feel cold tears in your eyes, triggered by an unexplained touch in your heart. That is how it felt.
