KZN Public Works hosts EPWP Indaba

Thumbs Up for Job Creation

Just a week after the Presidential Jobs Summit hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa, KwaZulu-Natal Public Works kicked off a two-day Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Indaba. Communication director for the Ministry of Human Settlements and Public Works, Kiru Naidoo said: "More than 250 delegates from government departments, municipalities, public entities, and NGOs have gathered at the Archie Gumede Conference Centre in Mayville with the directives from the job summit uppermost in their minds." Public Works is responsible for the overall coordination of EPWP in the province. He added that the agenda will take stock of the EPWP performance in creating job opportunities for unemployed people across the province. EPWP is one of the largest public employment programmes in the world.

It is now in phase three of its implementation. "The focus of the indaba is to measure the direct impact of the programme on poverty alleviation and job creation," added Naidoo. More than three million public work opportunities have been created since the inception of the programme. The indaba will culminate in the Kamoso Awards for excellence in EPWP implementation to be hosted on Friday evening in Umhlanga. Human Settlements and Public Works MEC, Ravi Pillay who was a delegate to the Presidential Jobs Summit will be the keynote speaker at the awards ceremony.

Key players in the EPWP indaba are Public Works senior officials Xolani Xulu, Nokwanda Dube, Siso Luvuno and Siduduzo Simelane.
