Empowering Youth through Agriculture is the Backbone of Growth and Development

As part of the initiate of empowering the youth of Gamalakhe Township with skills and knowledge, MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni, on Friday 24 January 2020 she hosted an Agricultural Symposium for local youth under the theme, "Agriculture is the Backbone of Growth and Development".

The Office of MEC Nkonyeni lined up a panel of agricultural experts to provide information on Hydroponic Farming and Agro-processing, Agricultural Opportunities in Ugu District, Co-operative Training and Development and accessioning funds from the National Skills Fund. The experts said access to quality and nutritious food is fundamental to human existence and access to food can produce positive impacts such as economic growth, job creation and poverty alleviation. Young people were also empowered with information on establishing a Co-Operative Bank. Delivering the purpose of the day MEC Nkonyeni said “through this symposium we trying to address the issues of unemployment and inequalities especially with the previously disadvantaged.”
