Mayibongwe Mnguni is Flying Higher Into The Future

On Monday 24 February 2020, the 'Communication team' had an undivided, unique but special interaction with Mayibongwe Harmonious Cool Mnguni, who has completed his degree as Quantity Surveyor. He is one of the department’s ‘intern student’, training towards becoming a Professional Quantity Surveyor. He has registered as Candidate Quantity Surveyor with the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession and still doing his training with ProQS Quantity Surveyors, a quantity surveying company based in Vryheid, North of KwaZulu-Natal. He has been contracted to the department’s Internship Programme since 2017 until 2024. Hopefully, he may be with the department’s staff complement as and when the time, circumstances permit. Other exciting news is that Maybongwe started his flying training as a pilot with the Learn2fly at Wonderboom Airport in, located in the North of Pretoria, Gauteng in 2018. He later changed pilot training schools to where he is currently registered, at Blue-Chip Flight School also at Wonderboom.

Public Works’ North Coast Region has done it again… and again. It so amazing to announce that Mayibongwe Mnguni is walking in the footsteps of the department’s giants within the professional services. He follows the footprints of people like Phumlani Khuzwayo – the department’s Professional Architect from North Coast Region and Sphephelo Mhlongo – Professional Architect, who is currently based at Head Office. Now you know – we have an ‘intern’ who is Quantity Surveyor, a trainee pilot or cadet pilot, within the commercial airline industry, undertaking ab initio training (with little to no experience) with a major airline gaining all commercial pilot ratings in order to fly for that particular airline) and ‘to add spice’ he is also a long distance athlete.

If you would recall, Phumlani has been a staunch mentor to most emerging professionals from North Coast Region. They are amongst others, Nandipha Makhaye, Thabani Mzizi and Amanda Menyuka (all Professional Architects),with HlaloSkosana (currently studying towards completion of a Master’s Degree in Architecture by end 2020) and Sphephelo Njomane Mhlongo who is a Professional Architect and also holds a further qualification of Master’s Degree in Urban Design. It is without doubt that the department depends on these officials within the Professional Services. They continue to accelerate the pedal of professionalism and ethics in the construction industry and built environment. They are core in thanking and advancing the infrastructure delivery of the province. As long as these ‘giants’ remain in the arms of the provincial government, then Public Works will forever stamp its authority as an ‘implementing agent of choice’.

It would be unfair and inappropriate not to commend Zibonele Shabangu – the department’s former Chief Quantity Surveyor and mentor who has been a strong pillar behind the success and bright work life of Mayibongwe Mnguni. The bright young man sadly lost his father at an early age of eight (8) with his 53 year old mom, Thabisile Mnguni, single-handedly had to raise all her children including Cool. He enrolled with the University of the Witwatersrand in 2014 for Bachelor of Science in Construction Studies and completed it in 2016 and continued in 2017 to studying a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Quantity Surveying.

Readers may have so many unanswered questions about Mr. Mnguni. How does he get it right to study as a ‘QS’ whilst training as a pilot? When does he have time to do all these demanding tasks? Who funds him though? Our stories on Mayibongwe will reveal and answer all these questions and many more.

There is always a first time in life and every accomplishment starts with a try. One will always try when one has an ambition and goal. Let us be on the lookout. It is a confirmation, if the weather permits so, that Mayibongwe is planning to fly from Gauteng and land at Ulundi Airport on Saturday 21 March 2020.
