The Southern Region Staff Get their Hands Dirty For Madiba

2019 marks 10 years of global support for Nelson Mandela International Day. Since its inception in 2009, there has been an overwhelming support of good Samaritans across the world doing good will to those in need. Mandela day has five focus areas, which are education and literacy, food and nutrition, shelter, sanitation and active citizenship. On the 18th of July 2019 the Southern Region celebrated Mandela Day by visiting Senzokuhle Crèche at Unit 18 Imbali, Ward 15.

The crèche was founded in 1987, but has been in very bad state, which has not been conducive for learning. The Southern Region team was able to identify this crèche through the Department of Social Development, as one of the areas of learning that was in great need for support. When Southern region staff members learnt about the story of Senzokuhle crèche they decided to collect money and partnered with Wildlands conservation trust to give the children of Senzokuhle crèche a bit of hope.

The Southern region team came in their numbers to paint the crèche, they also did titling, planted 20 trees, and brought so much colour into a space where children should dwell. Since the current state of the crèche was unsafe structurally for children because of the flooring, the team were at work to ensure that the structure was conducive for learning when they were done.

They also bought paint to allow each of the children to add their handprint into the work. This made the children very excited and involved in the process of the day. The team also assisted with the proper installation of doors and windows. A total of five desks were donated to the crèche so that the teachers would have a working space. Amongst the things donated was mattresses for the children to sleep on during nap times as well as some treats for the children.

It was undeniably an “all hands on deck” setting with everyone working hard to ensure the success of the project. The whole team gave more than just 67 minutes. The team stayed in the crèche up until the work was completed. There was such a tangible happiness during the hard labour, where employees felt fulfilled by the work they had done for those in need. In the words of Nelson Mandela “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead” this best describes what the Southern Region team gave to Senzokuhle Creche.
