Change Starts With You As A Man

The aim of men's day is to celebrate the importance of men in the workplace as well as to raise awareness of sensitive issues that directly and indirectly affect men across South Africa. The Southern Region hosted its first men’s day event on the 19th of July 2019. The events was populated with several men from the region, who showed their sincere support for the initiative.

The event was graced by two speakers Mr. Ngobese as Saps official and Mr. Mkila a student at a local University. The two men brought two perspectives on understanding Zulu masculinity and identity. Mr. Ngobese spoke on critical issues such as the fact that men statistically do not look good and are seen as the perpetrators of violence on children and women. He gave the male audience steps on how to avoid being violent, and how to faithful to their partners and wife’s, he additionally taught men how to communicate with their voices not their fits. The highlight of his talk was about how men needed to be visionaries in their homes, because their vision will guide their planning. He urged men to be better listeners to their partners and children, which would warrant less violence. In his closing remarks, Mr Ngobese so eloquently stated, “Change starts with you as a man”. He urged them the make significant changes in their personal lives and workspaces to attempt to be better.

Mr. Mkila spoke about the fact that he constantly sees older men victimizing young women at Universities and Colleges. He advised the men present to be examples to younger women and to stop being Sugar Daddies. He also asked the men to equip younger men with issues of identity. He further articulated that, younger men are constantly in search of their identity and experience masculinity issues that the older men can shed guidance on.

After the speakers had shared their remarks, the men read a pledge aloud to stop all forms of violence against women and children. The pledges were read in several languages to accommodate all race groups. The reading of the pledge was so relevant to the speeches that were given.

Once the event had commenced, the men celebrated with simplicity. There was a snacks and a braai set up to make the event more exciting. Some of the men in the braai team had cooked a delicious pap and a bean relish, which they were very proud of. The whole environment was just full of excitement and bursting of joy and jubilance. This event was all together colourful, and tremendously impactful and sincerely relevant to all the men who attended.
