The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Honourable Honourable Sihle Zikalala attended and graced the International Day of People with Disability on Thursday 3 December 2020 at the Glencoe Town Hall, Endumeni Local Municipality of the UMzinyathi District. The event was held at the time where South Africans and the world at large is hit but slowly recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. In year 2013, the South African cabinet declared the period 03 November to 03 December as a month for celebrating the lives of people with disabilities. In conjunction with the United Nations (UN), the South African government identified the 3rd of December each year, as the day on which the rights and lives of people with disabilities should be remembered, honoured and celebrated.

The theme of the day under which the celebration was held was “Together let us build united communities which cares for the human rights of the disabled people.” Premier Zikalala committed the provincial government in the role of making sure that all people enjoy their disability rights which will result to a better life for all.

Talking about the unwanted effects of the country lockdown state, Honourable Zikalala mentioned that the lockdown crippled the economy. This was not just the case domestically but this, was also the effect in the international trade as all countries internationally had to shut down their economic activities and their boundaries in response of minimising or even eradicating the spread of the infection through the movement of people and goods.

The Premier praised and thanked the KZN MEC for Social Development, Mrs Nonhlanhla Khoza for her continued commitment and support to give financial assistance to those organisations that cater for the disabled people, especially during the lockdown state when other businesses closed shops. Furthermore he thanked the Social Workers and Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Workers for playing the major role of caring for disabled people.
