MEC Sibiya officially handed over a property to a community of eSikhawini Township, 17 June 2021

As part of marking 100 days in office on Thursday 17 June 2021, the MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Hon. Jomo Sibiya handed over a property owned by KZN Public Works to members of Zamani Disabled Peoples’ Organisation in Esikhawini Township. Prior to the handing over, the MEC visited uMthonjaneni Local Municipality to monitor progress around the construction of houses.

Addressing the members of Zamani Disabled Peoples’ Organisation, the MEC expressed his appreciation to the people of KwaZulu – Natal for making his 100 days in office an unforgettable experience. "The role they played in criticizing and guiding me and all categories of staff in both departments is a clear demonstration that the people of this province are determined to make a KwaZulu – Natal a prosperous province."

Zamani Disabled Peoples’ Organisation, is a Non-Profit Organisation based in Esikhawini that caters for disabled people in the community. The organization is involved in Clothing and Textile Industry specializing in sawing, beadwork, embroidery, and shoe repairs. MEC Sibiya was impressed that the members of the organization are involved in this industry, “This sector is not only labour absorbing but presents endless opportunities for women, youth and people with disabilities.”

The founder and Chairperson of the Organisation, Mr Samuel Mthembu was overwhelmed with joy when the property worth R1.4million was officially handed over to them. “I feel happy and sad at the same because the people that we started this journey with them have passed away. We saw a need that the disabled people should unite and speak with one, they must do something that will motivate them.” Mr Mthembu further mentioned that he is excited that the government listened to their plea when they requested that the property be officially handed over to them.

The Mayor of uMhlathuze Municipality, Cllr MG Mhlongo congratulated the organization and revealed that black people had a challenge previously where they could not own any property or land. “We are bringing back what belongs to people, thank you Department of Public Works for such good deed.”

The members of the organization were thrilled when the MEC mentioned that the Department will assist with renovating and painting the building. In conclusion, the MEC thanked staff from both departments for the support they have given him since he assumed his responsibilities as MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works.
