MEC Applauds Black Excellence Within the Property Sector

On Tuesday 22 May 2021, the KwaZulu-Natal Public Works Portfolio Committee conducted an oversight visit in Zululand District. The purpose of this visit was to monitor and review the lease agreements by the Department of Public Works within the Zululand District.

The Legislature delegation was welcomed my MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Jomo Sibiya, together with his executive team. “As a department we always welcome the advice and counsel of the Portfolio Committee and we will never be above the committee as they have the responsibility to lead the department and give guidance. Today I can assure you that despite all the challenges that we may face, we are working hard and we believe that we are going to make it.”

Zululand District Municipality has the fewest number of leases under its portfolio compared to other districts in the province. The major reason for this is that most departments’ local, district and regional offices within the district municipality are utilizing the LA Offices in Ulundi which belong to the KwaZulu-Natal Government. Public Works is in the process of getting the departments to contribute towards the running and the upkeep of the LA offices. Most of the current lease within the district are from a black-owned company Siyanda cc. The MEC commended the work done by this company, “When you see a black man, African in particular, being the service provider to the government of KwaZulu-Natal is a remarkable thing, we want to encourage more black people to be part of the property industry and be the ones to be the center of the economy,” said Sibiya.

After the presentations and recommendations by both the Portfolio Committee and the Department of Public Works, the delegation made its way to view one of the leased offices currently being utilized by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Social Development in Phongola CBD.
