Military Veterans and Disability Sector Capacitated with Knowledge on Procurement Processes

On 05 October 2021, the Department of Public Works hosted a Contractor Training Workshop for Military Veterans and Disability Sector. The Department is committed towards providing continuous support to the uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans who fought for the freedom of South Africa. This is to ensure that the Veterans are able to obtain a continuous source of income through contractual work offered by the Department. In the past, people with disabilities in South Africa have been excluded from the mainstream of society and therefore have been prevented from accessing basic social rights, political and economic rights. The Department of Public Works is working hard in changing this stereotype by providing enabling mechanisms to promote employment opportunities and self-sustenance.

“It is our responsibility as a government department to provide a conducive environment for contractors and potential contractors in order for them to be able to provide services and in turn receive remuneration,” said Mr Bongani Dlamini: Chief Director: EPWP, while outlining the purpose of the day. The workshop entailed crucial information from presentations about Supply Chain Management Pricing, Supply Chain Management Issues, Property Management, Construction Guidelines and Eyesizwe Contractor Development Programme – Phase III. Ms Delisile Mncube: Director: Youth, Women, People with Disabilities and Military Veterans stated the plans of the Department for Military Veterans and the Disability Sector. “I am pleased to announce that the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has approved this programme as a Developmental Programme which in future will have projects specifically targeting designated groups,” said Ms Mncube. The delegates were also given an opportunity to engage by asking questions and airing their views.

The Department of Public Works continues to be dedicated in addressing the political and economic inequalities and reinforced exclusionary barriers of the past.
