Departmental Midterm Review

On 08 November 2021 the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works held a Midterm Performance Review at Archie Gumede Conference Centre in Mayville. All the Senior Management Service members gathered to reflect on the progress of the Department since the start of the 2021/2022 financial year.

The Acting Head of Department Mr Sboniso Majola welcomed everyone and outlined the purpose of the meeting. “Midterm is not about reporting only but a broader evaluation of our organizational performance, but above all how we have achieved the organizational goals through the measures of efficiency, effectiveness, cost-effective, within quality and within time,” sad Mr. Majola. “An organization that does not put itself through evaluation and testing is bound to under develop, resist transformation, lead to poor reflection and poor judgement,” HOD added.

The two-day meeting was officially opened by KwaZulu-Natal MEC Human Settlements and Public Works Mr Jomo Sibiya. In his opening remarks, the MEC highlighted the areas that he had previously mentioned that he would like to see major transformation within the Department. “Premier Sihle Zikalala delivered The State of the Province Address under the theme “Quickening the Tempo to Economic Recovery and Job Creation.” “We have agreed that as a department we would play a role towards creating and saving jobs. We stated that an Infrastructure Revolution would enable us to meet this target. We undertook to make a meaningful contribution towards economic recovery. We said we would achieve this by ensuring efficiency and speed in the implementation of social infrastructure projects.”

Proramme 1: The rolling out of digital infrastructure (ICT) in the department and the payment of Service Providers within 30 days.

Programme 2:  Transformation in the Property Sector where ownership of properties leased to government departments for office accommodation should be reflective of the demographics of South Africa. The department has committed to donating dilapidated buildings to municipalities for human settlements purposes.

Programme 3: On Infrastructure Delivery the department has completed 151 capital projects in 9 district municipalities and one metro in the previous financial year. Significant interventions need to be put in place in order to advance radical socio-economic transformation within the infrastructure sector.

The various programs and regions delivered their Midterm reports and were extensively interrogated with subsequent plans and possible solutions. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works continues to work tirelessly and is committed to being the implementing agent of choice.
