Southern Region plants 67 trees on Mandela Day

Southern Region officials dedicated their Mandela Day at Dlangani High School in Bulwer where they planted 67 trees, cleaned toilets and fixed water pipes on 18 July 2018. The region also donated blankets, sleeping sponges and fruits to the school. "We have identified Dlangani High School in responding to the call of spending 67 minutes to make an impact in the communities." Says Ms Thandeka Zondi, Deputy Director from Southern Region explaining the purpose of the visit.

The planting of trees will definitely have great impact as trees contribute to the environment by providing oxygen, improve air quality and support wildlife. Dlangani High School has many good stories to tell; it was established in 1980 and has a computer lab with 30 computers and a digital library. The school, despite the fact that it is situated in a rural area always excel in scarce skills subjects - Maths and Science. The officials who showed team spirit worked tirelessly cleaning the school and fixing broken water pipes. The joy and excitement was written in the faces of the teachers and learners when they saw water coming from the pipes.

She said with excitement “Thank you Department of Public Works for choosing this school, this school always strive for excellence. For the past five years we have performed above 90% in matric results.”

The hard work and efforts made by the region was greatly appreciated by everyone.
