Minister of Public Works pays it forward at uMhlathuze Local Municipality

On Friday, 1 September 2017, the Minister of Public Works Mr Nathi Nhleko in collaboration with municipal stakeholders and government departments conducted a Career Expo at uMhlathuze Local Municipality. The Career Expo targeted learners from Grade 9-10.

As expected thousands of learners from various schools gathered to learn about career choices, education requirements, entrepreneurship opportunities, funding, bursary and scholarship opportunities. The Expo also fostered interpersonal skills amongst the youth through networking sessions with exhibitors. The Department of Public Works did not only organise the event at a National level but also invited the province of KwaZulu-Natal’s Public Works to also come to exhibit and inform the youth about the Department provincially.

It emerged that Minister Nhleko also grew up in uMhlathuze Local Municipality and served the community as a Municipal Manager a few years ago. Coming back to uMhlathuze Municipality was something very close to the Minister’s heart and was reflected in the speech that the Minister shared with the youth. There were also of speakers from various institutions that spoke to the youth present. Minister Nhleko urged the youth to “take the opportunity to learn as much as you can”. He stressed the fact that future leaders would come from the very group of people gathered. The youth were encouraged to take charge of their lives.

Minister Nhleko also took the opportunity to call every single teacher present at the event to come up to the front. He honoured all the teachers and thanked them for all the hard work that they do every day.
The event was altogether exciting with several fun exhibitions for scholars to visit. Refreshments and music was provided for learners as they toured the various stands. Overall, the event went a long way to radically affect the choices that young people can make when choosing their subjects and career paths.
