KZN Works

ETHEKWINI: On Wednesday 16 April 2025, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works and Infrastructure held a Supply Chain Management (SCM) Indaba in Mayville, Durban.

A first of its kind, the Indaba aims to create a platform for dialogue between management and all SCM officials within the department in an effort to shift the negative stereotype of SCM in government being viewed as riddled with corruption and delayed procurement processes. The event is also aimed with equipping and refreshing officials with the necessary knowledge when crafting bid/ tender specification documents, the dos and don’ts for SCM practitioners and the legal implications for negligent SCM practitioners, are among the key topics.

In his opening remarks, the acting Head of Department, Dr Vish Govender echoed his sentiments on the importance of Supply Chain Management as catalyst for service delivery. “The Indaba will assist in developing ways to eliminate the wrong doings and move towards best practices within the ambit of the law,” said Dr Govender.

The Indaba is also held a time when the department is bolstering efforts of tightening internal controls with the establishment of the Ethics Desk, which will closely monitor unlawful financial conduct, particular for SCM practitioners.

The SCM Indaba is set to be held on a regular basis as KZN Public Works and Infrastructure is determined to improve and fastrack service delivery in an effort to build KZN better.
