


















PIETERMARITZBURG: Wednesday, 25 March 2026 marks the day with mixed emotions as colleagues and close friends bid farewell to the Director: Occupational Health, Safety and Systems Ms Dudu Fihlela, who is set to retire from the public service with effect from 31 March 2026.
Ms Fihlela’s legacy, which has shaped many careers within the KZN Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, is defined by her level of professionalism, capable leadership skills, and proper guidance in infrastructure delivery.
She is defined as a valuable government technocrat who has served the Department with distinction for 17 solid years.
Her work career began with the Department of Education in the 1990’s where she served as an educator. She was later promoted to the position of Deputy School Manager. Some years later, dedication saw her climbing the ladder to assume a school management role.
From December 2003, she joined the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry in the capacity of a Deputy Director: Change Management and Transformation.
In 2009, she was appointed Regional Director: EThekwini Region, which attests to the fact that her career span within the Department. Her rigorous demonstration of ethical leadership paved a way for her when she was appointed North Coast Regional Director. Currently, Ms Fihlela occupies the position of a Director: Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) and Systems.
While colleagues will dearly miss her steady presence and wisdom, it is exciting that she will enjoy a well-deserved new chapter of relaxation and adventure.
