On the 29th of July 2019, the Head Office team went to visit Villa Maria Primary School situated
at Maqongqo village, to shine the Mandela month spirit. The team donated 22 pairs of shoes and
socks that made learners burst in excitement, as well as bags of oranges that could feed an army.
The contributions towards the donations were from Head Office staff members, who showed
sincere concerns about needy children and how this could influence their education.
‘Do not sell yourself short’ was the key message delivered to the learners of Villa Maria. Ms Fikile
Luthuli, Deputy Director from Change Management profoundly advised the learners to dream big
and urged the parents to protect their children. “I urge you to protect your kids, know their
whereabouts and raise them in a good way. There are many cases reported daily of children
being raped, so please protect them from such incidents,” Ms Luthuli said.

Parents and learners were excited as they sang beautifully in remembrance of the late Nelson Mandela. Nonsikelelo Nala, a Grade 7 learner thanked the team, wholeheartedly, for their kind act. “This donation means a lot to us because it encourages us to do right and excel in our studies. It teaches us that we also need to return the favour to the needy when we have finished school.”

Nonsikelelo has a dream of becoming a Social Psychologist one day. Her passion for a career in
Social Psychology started when she noticed a boy at school who could not achieve good results
because of drugs. She felt the pain and realized that it is important to talk to someone when faced
with challenges in life.
The educators were humbled to be the chosen ones on receiving such a good gesture. Mr Sibisi,
the school principal joyfully thanked the Public Works team; “Thank you for making us proud.
These children will never forget you because you came to their rescue.” He said cheerfully. He
further elaborated that Villa Maria Primary School is a loving family that fears God.
Ms Delisile Mncube, Director for Youth, Women and People with Disabilities encouraged children
to work hard and consider choosing careers in the built environment. She immensely declared
that the team from Public Works love them and wish them to be successful one day.
The day unfolded with learners receiving and appreciating the contributions of donations from
Public Works officials.
