Count Us Too - Mens Forum at Works dealing with social ills

On Friday 28 July 2017, approximately 60 male officials from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works attended the Men’s Day celebration held in a form of ‘Imbizo Yamadoda – Information Session For Men’ at the Auditorium of Public Works’ Head Office in Pietermaritzburg.

It was thought provoking and exciting to experience the vibrancy and enthusiasm of all attendees from the speeches and presentations by Dr Jason Williams, a health practitioner and Mr SD Nkosi respectively. As part of the programme, Sthabiso Zulu, a staunch artist and ‘Maskandi’ musician filled the atmosphere with the ‘sounds, pleasures and melancholy’ of his music.

As the country stages war on crimes and abuse against ‘women, children and Persons with Disabilities’, all male officials from KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works have made positive inroads towards supporting such movement. The department has officially established a “KZN Public Works Men’s Forum”, which is fully functional and continues to register impact.

The forum comprises of all male officials, within all the departmental structures. It aims making a positive impact and long-lasting difference in the lives of vulnerable women and children, including Persons with Disabilities. Needless to acknowledge that we are in the Public Service but we are men too. We stand to be counted amongst those that do ‘right’ and ‘good’.

To date, the forum has achieved cultivation of partnerships with established community groups, opinion makers, Health and Wellness groups and other sectors of the civil society. Constructive deliberations are engaged to address and teach men about family values, healthy lifestyles and manhood in particular. Some highlights achieved by the forum include embracing healthy family relations; Commitment to marriage - conforming to trust, honesty and transparency; Leading by example - doing right things; Healthy living and managing finances. As we pride ourselves as a ‘caring department’, words of appreciation go to Mr Mthoko Nene, the programme director on the day, who kept the audience and the day’s event intact.
