Midlands Region Career Development Drive

The countrys shortage of skills, especially in the ‘built environment’ has prompted the Midlands regional office to embark on a ‘career expo’ targeting rural areas of the Province. The main aim of the career expos is to encourage learners to consider choosing careers in infrastructure development and the built environment. On Wednesday 2 August 2017, the region visited jubilant learners of Bhekathina High School, situated in the rural area of Escourt called Ntabamhlophe.

As part of the programme, personnel from the region delivered presentations on bursaries, in-service training and internships. Ms Dolly Hlongwane, an Employee Health and Wellness Practitioner directed the programme. Her opening remarks and words of wisdom to the learners were inspiring and heartening. “In life you must never settle for less but aim high and you will get good results at the end of the year,” she encouraged.
The learners welcomed this opportunity and were eager to ask questions. They were pleased to learn what the Department of Public Works is all about and receive information on careers in the built environment.

Among other presenters were Bonisiwe Mazibuko and Lindokuhle Sibeko. Both were appointed as ‘in – service’ trainees in the region to obtain practical experience. They started their training on Tuesday 1 August 2017 within the Human Resource Management component.

Mr Mdluli, a Mathematics and Science tutor at Bhekathina High School thanked the Department on behalf of the school. “Thank you to the Department of Public Works for such an initiative. We are very fortunate as a school to get this opportunity”, he said. He further urged learners to work hard and seize the opportunities presented to them.
Public Works’ personnel handed over a few school bags to the learners as gifts. Words of appreciation from Ms Nosipho Hadebe and Mr Ntokozo Ndlela concluded the programme. Both learners from the school thanked the department for such an ‘eye opening’ occasion.
