PIETERMARITZBURG: Wednesday 11 March 2026, KwaZulu- Natal Department of Public Works and Infrastructure hosted a two-day (11 – 12 March 2026) Construction Project Management workshop at the Pietermaritzburg Headquarters. Among others, the workshop attended by officials from the Infrastructure Management and Technical Support (IMTS) Directorate and relevant Senior Management Service (SMS) cohort were set to zoom into challenges that occur during the construction processes and reflect on mitigating factors and strategies designed to address and tackle them accordingly. From the onset, setting the tone for fruitful discussions, the Acting Head of Department Dr Vish Govender pleaded for maximum discipline and respect in the workplace. The AHOD cited these important behavioral aspects as the best recipe for achieving good end-results.
The workshop facilitator mirrored a couple of underlying reasons that may lead to project and contract management failures. It also came to light that a project life cycle involves managing resources, budgets, timelines and stakeholders to deliver projects on time, within budget, and specified quality standards. Government technocrats in attendance have been reminded that Construction Project Management requires strong leadership to coordinate various specialist projects and a capacity to resolve conflicts between stakeholders where applicable.
