KZN Public Works joins eDumbe Career Expo 2012

It is a career Expo arranged and coordinated by the eDumbe Municipality, in the area of Paulspietersburg closer to Vryheid. On a cold and rainy Saturday the 15th of September 2012 the chairperson and programme director for the day, Mr N.M Mathabela introduced the gathering and guests on the reason for the event. This was indeed a busy schedule for the “Communications Team” represented by Vusi Shabalala and Sane Khumalo as they had to proceed with their journey from Nongoma to eDumbe Municipality, the most beautiful part of KwaZulu-Natal, right in Paulspietersburg. It should be mentioned that the Department’s Human Resource Development was represented by Messrs Thulani Mdlalose and Nkabinde XMS both from the Department of Public Works’ North Coast Regional Office within the Human resource Development Directorate.

The event was scheduled into two sessions, the first being the briefing session which was held at the eDumbe Municipality Offices. The second session being the main event where potential and future entrepreneurs will be provided with the information they deserve in relation to career choosing. A word of welcome and other remarks on related issues of the day was conducted by Mr W.M.Nxumalo (Mkhatshwa), the Director Corporate and who also serves as a councillor within eDumbe community. As the event commenced very later than anticipated at approximately 11:00, Mr Nxumalo also had to conduct the introduction of guests as well.

The event was graced by the presence of the Deputy Mayor for eDumbe Municipality, Councillor D.J.Nhlengethwa together with the Speaker of the Municipality, Councillor Simelane. The honourable Deputy Mayor made the presentations on behalf of the Mayor for eDumbe who was not present on the day in question.

The crucial importance of the Expo was to involve all community members especially the youth with regard to means and ways of putting in place all interventions in developing the community of eDumbe. Mrs Nhlengethwa indicated that “I really feel disheartened when I see community members around who are plagued by poverty and unemployment” she remarked. “I therefore plead with all of you to proffer the relevant or required students with information that will serve best their interest for their career upgrade for the betterment of their lives and the development of eDumbe” she urged. The Deputy Mayor equally commended all previous sponsors that managed to provide support and intake of students during the past Career Expo 2011. Amongst the institutions and stakeholders that provide support were Old Mutual (10), ZDM (10) Department of Education (17) and eDumbe (8). This was an achievement even though there is still more to do for improvement.

The reason for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works was to showcase and foster the mandate of government by reaching out to the masses. To close the first session, Councillor N.D.Dlangalala had to provide a word of thanks to all stakeholders and representatives from the Provincial Departments to continue with the hard and positive strides of delivery. After the briefing the whole gathering moved to the marquee which was erected not far from the eDumbe Municipality offices, where all students who were eagerly waiting for the entourage to provide the required services.

The second session started with a bang….quite a bang. There was jubilation and standing ovation as the Deputy Mayor and her entourage arrived at the marquee. Students were really in high mood of the event. Amongst stakeholder s present were Educators from various Schools at Dumbe; Tradepoint South Africa; KZN Public Works; 1KZN TV; Successors Training Institute; eDumbe Municipality; SABC Ukhozi FM represented by Mr Sbu Buthelezi; KwaMcashane FET College; Representatives from Ongoye; Zendeland Post; Department of Trade and Industry (National); Representatives and Entrepreneurs from various institutions and businesses.

At the second session the programme was also outlined accordingly as Councillor Khumalo also responsible for Ward 7 at eDumbe was on board with an opening prayer for the occasion to be blessed. It should be mentioned that the participation of guests and students was overwhelming, one would not even believe that it was a Saturday, regarded commonly and mostly as a half day. The Speaker for eDumbe Municipality, Councillor Simelane, who also serve Ward 8 again, had an opportunity to introduce all guests present.

The actual programme commenced and it all started with the welcoming remarks from eDumbe’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Nhlengethwa.

After all introductions were conducted all institutions that came for the purposes of career information, guidance and advice came on board. The first presentation was done by Mr David Ndlela from Trade and Industry in Pretoria gave a brief understanding on the problematic issues that concern the country’s inequality, poverty and unemployment. After the presentation by Mr Ndlela there came moment of providing an in-depth motivation to the students, that was when Mr Sbu Buthelezi from SABC Ukhozi FM was given the podium to address the students. After Mr Buthelezi’s appalling speech the marquee was rocked with a vibration of ululation and the buzzing of voices of joy. Hereafter it was an opportunity for representatives from institutions to give their respective presentations. Notwithstanding the day’s weather there guests were full swing to visit exhibition stands from various departments and stakeholders. It was still almost afternoon the time clock clicking and ticking to 14: 30 when the event came to closure and all students, guests, stakeholders, eDumbe community members had to depart. There is still more to achieve.. this is a calling to provide service delivery for the betterment of peoples’ lives.
