Departmental Strategic Planning Session

On 25 November 2021 the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works held its two-day Strategic Planning Session at the Archie Gumede Conference Centre in Durban. Over the two days, managers led by the MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Mr Jomo Sibiya, gathered to discuss, share and make important decisions towards improving the services provided by the department.

The planning session was officially opened by MEC Jomo Sibiya. “During this session we need to be strategic in thinking about how do we shift the department to be a strategic department where it is seen by all other departments as the solution to the province. Ours is to implement infrastructure in the province and in doing so we need shift, reposition and repurpose the department to be capable of being the implementing agent of choice. We will confront difficult issues and ask difficult questions but it is about improving Infrastructure Service Provision and also moving with times. We must work towards building a capable and ethical state, I can confidently say that the team is ready to rise to the occasion,” MEC Sibiya said.

In his overview, Acting Head of Department Mr Sboniso Majola outlined what the session means to the department. “This planning period called for reflection on the Departmental vision and approach to its business and services to the public through client departments. The department is dependent on its staff to deliver on the vision. We cannot succeed without skilled, motivated and dedicated men and women who are committed and resolute in responding to the challenging environment in which we operate,” Mr Majola explained.

The delegates were separated into three commissions where they discussed ways in which the department can leverage the KwaZulu-Natal Government infrastructure portfolio and present development opportunities.
