Background

Maphophoma Primary School was Anglican missionary schools build in 1918 for the local community. It was extended by the pupil of Maphophoma school in 1974 since then the building have been collapsing .The school principal who was once a learner at Maphophoma School in the 70’s made a request to the Department of Education Vryheid District office for the renovations and construction of new classrooms. The site was handed over on 08/11/2008.

  • The Project Steering Committee (PSC) has been established to address social issues main project are discussed and assist in the recruitment of unskilled local community.

The project is 90% complete, Water has been installed connected and electricity is temporally connected.

The  service  description is for this project is repairs and renovations to all buildings and ablutions 
The contract per project initially was 18 months and expected completion date 
The expenditure to date is amounting to R 7 256 320.32

Innovativeness of the project The project is EPWP defined; the elements of EPWP principles are implemented on site. The employees have been trained on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), HIV/AIDS and EPWP signage board has been is erected.
NYS Placement

3 NYS phase 1 bricklaying & plastering learners have been absorbed as permanent employees.
2 NYS phase 2 Carpentry learners’ have been afforded opportunity to obtain practical training till March 2010.

Impact on the Community

Established ( PSC) has intensified the hiring of  unemployed local  laborers with the aim of  alleviating poverty and skill transfers objective
